Overtime is your rate times a multiplier

Overtime pay takes your normal hourly rate and applies a higher multiplier to the extra hours — commonly 1.5 (time and a half) or 2 (double time). This calculator splits regular and overtime hours, applies the multiplier to the overtime portion, and sums the total.

For freelancers, a rush or out-of-hours multiplier is a fair way to price work that disrupts your schedule — agree it in writing before you start.

Set the rush rate before the rush

Clients accept premium rates far more readily when they were stated up front. Put your overtime or rush multiplier in your terms so the higher number is expected, not a surprise on the invoice.

Frequently asked questions

What multiplier should I use for overtime?
Time and a half (1.5x) is the most common; some use double time (2x) for nights, weekends, or holidays. As a freelancer you set your own, ideally agreed in the contract.
How is total pay calculated?
Regular hours times your rate, plus overtime hours times your rate times the multiplier. The two are added for the total.
Do freelancers get overtime?
There is no legal overtime for the self-employed, but you can absolutely set a higher rate for rush or out-of-hours work — it is simply part of your pricing.
